Day 48 of 145 of the 2011 World Cruise
Twelve times a year we have a ceremony honouring crew members who went “Above and Beyond” the call of duty. We call it the Employee of the Month. Any crew member can nominate anybody and it gets passed on to the manager or supervisor. The Senior Officers then get together and choose one person out of all the nominees. Some months we have more nominees than others and sometimes the reasons for them being nominated are better than others. For the month of January this was the case.
But allow me to brag just a moment about our fantastic crew today, because it’s the CREW that make cruise ships special. The crew create the soul and character of the ship. It’s not the Captain, General Manager or Cruise Director, or any other one person – It is a team of individuals with a shared vision, consistently working towards a common goal. Around here that translates to taking advantage of opportunities to go “Above and Beyond.” To do it with class, honesty and integrity – three things which I believe is greatly lacking in most societies today… But it’s not lacking out here in our little society of 450 crew members from over 40 nations.
Please read the about three of our nominees…
Ali has been with us for many years and always manages to shine with his consistency, respect for his guests and colleagues and displays a pleasant personality, which is always accompanied by a smile. This month, he showed us also his remarkable integrity when one of his guests informed him that she was missing the diamond out of her wedding ring and had no idea where it had been lost. He searched everywhere in the suite and could not find it. He then took two full vacuum cleaner bags, which had been used in recent days to clean the room, and he cut them open and emptied out all of the contents and sifted through the dirt by hand where he eventually found the diamond and returned it to the happy guest.
Indah displays character and integrity every day she is on board. However, one day this month with a great display of integrity, she delivered “The Regent Experience” to a guest who lost / left his wallet with $1,950 in cash in the Constellation Theater. It was stuck in the seat cushions and she noticed it, removed it and handed it over the Reception Desk where it was quickly returned to the guest who hadn’t even realized it was missing.
Raymond was working on Pool Deck while servicing our guests. Due to sudden movements of the ship, following worsening of sea conditions, he noticed an eight year old child who looked scared and began to panic as the water in the pool started to create a large wave action from the pitching of the ship. Without hesitation and in full uniform he jumped in the water to bring her to safety.
Bravo to all of our crew who are truly dedicated to the happiness and overall well being of our guests. The world has a lot they could learn from these people and how well everyone from different nationalities, cultures and religions work together.
Happy Cruising! Cruise Director, Jamie Logan
